The Gâchère Dunes form an exceptional natural ecosystem. A precious refuge for biodiversity, the Dunes Beach is also one of the most popular spots on the Vendée coast. Preserve the dune? That would have meant not building at all… But to protect it from the influx of tourists, a small, basic facility proved essential to meet the basic needs of beachgoers. The project equips the site to meet the essential needs of visitors. A single building houses all the necessary facilities—lockers, restrooms, and trash bins—thereby minimizing the impact on the natural site. Magnum has designed a minimalist building for the town of Bretignolles-sur-Mer, incorporating essential amenities and conceived to provide only what is necessary, exactly where it is needed. The design philosophy behind this project combines sensitivity and simplicity. The building is intended to be uncluttered and clear in form, sustainable in its materials, and considerate of its surroundings. Its slender, strip-like form is situated at the start of the path and guides visitors toward the beach. Inspired by vernacular architecture, the project nestles along the ridgelines of the dunes, featuring a low profile and a single-sloped roof. Its central prominence signals the facility’s presence to the surrounding area, offering visitors shelter from unpredictable weather and a cool retreat on sunny days. The project is clad in horizontal wood siding reminiscent of traditional shellfish-farming architecture. A pattern of vertical slats lends the facade a more contemporary, grid-like appearance. The cladding’s installation method is designed to meet the needs of the building’s users for modularity, comfort, and privacy. At times openwork, the cladding allows natural light to pass through without compromising privacy. It also protects the central outdoor space from prevailing winds and allows for natural ventilation of the trash room. A sliding door, also made of wood, closes off the facility to protect it from the elements. Located on a sensitive site, the project is designed to be exemplary in its simplicity and offers the potential for disassembly. The structure and interior finishes of the building (excluding ceramic tile) are made entirely of French wood. Dry-joint construction facilitates the dismantling and reuse of the facility. Solar panels provide electrical self-sufficiency during the operating season.
